The term "social capital" has become a buzzword with a huge, already diffuse spectrum of application. This should give reason for conceptual and theoretical vigilance. What - in concrete - is the object when "social capital" is mentioned? This question has not been systematically dealt with and even less responsed in a satisfactory degree, although there are many contributions to the discussion of the term. The problem is labelled in the social sciences, but has not been resolved in the context of the specific social-scientific framework. This book takes the neglected metalinguistic perspective. Thus it advances the scientific maturity of the "social capital" debate and contributes to the establishment of a well-founded system in social science terms. It brings up social capital by combining an epistemological and ontological analysis and thus finally develops clarification of the concept.

It brings up social capital by combining an epistemological and ontological analysis and thus finally develops clarification of the concept.

The key focus of this book is to integrate elements of information and knowledge management, together with the business process and intellectual capital. The book questions some of the fundamental concepts and principles currently used to manage information that revolve around business processes. Specifically, it addresses the argument to more effectively evaluate the contributions of human and systems capital (which are defined) to a process, highlighting the need to make more conscious decisions about what role each will perform in the developed process.Covers the integration

At a time when governments and policy-makers put so much emphasis on 'the knowledge economy' and the economic value of education, human capital theory has never been more important. However, research in this area is often very technical and therefore not easily accessible to those who wish to use it as a guide to policy formation. This book provides an interface between such research and its potential applications in government, education and business. Reporting on a major research initiative, new findings are presented in a non-technical way on three major themes: measuring the benefits from human capital, applications of the human capital model, and policy interventions. Aimed at academic researchers and professionals concerned with the problems and techniques of human capital theory, it will also be useful for graduate courses on the economics of education to complement standard textbooks.

Corporate governance is regarded as a success factor for the development of growth companies and thus for the investments of venture capitalists. Despite its relevance for venture capital-financed companies and its impact on the firm value, the topic has so far not been extensively researched. Based on economic and managerial theories, Maik Kleinschmidt studies the relationship between venture capital, corporate governance, and firm value. He explores the determinants of venture capitalists’ influence as well as their impact on the corporate governance of portfolio companies. In a second step, he analyses the influence of corporate governance on the companies’ firm value. His findings support the hypothesis that venture capitalists improve the corporate governance of their portfolio companies and that their abilities determine their impact. Moreover, they show the positive impact of good corporate governance on some measures for firm value.

This book offers the first set of quantitative analyses of the results of deregulation of the gas wellhead process coupled with partial deregulation of pipeline transportation and product storage. This complex process - which involves taking pipelines out of the field markets as product purchasers, and creating spot gas and pipeline space markets - has changed the nature and extent of services for gas at the burner tip, and the level as well as volatility of prices for these services. Using econometric tools of analysis, the authors concentrating on these changes uncover surprising findings
